Katherine Jones is a Principal Study Oboist finishing her undergraduate studies at the Royal Academy of Music (RAM). In her time there she has studied with Melanie Ragge, Celia Nicklin and Ian Hardwick as well as Cor Anglais with Sue Bohling.

As an orchestral musician, Katherine was a member of various youth orchestras, including being Principal Oboe with the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain. During this time she toured to places including Tuscany and Slovenia, along with two appearances at the World Music Contest in Kerkrade, and several performances at the BBC Proms. Katherine was Principal Oboe with the RAM Symphony Orchestra under the batons of Semyon Bychkov and Jac van Steen. She has performed both baroque and modern repertoire, including being Principal Oboe/D’amore in one of the Bach Canata Series concerts at RAM and performing side by side with the London Sinfonietta . She also has experience in an opera pit, playing in a production of Figaro. To date she has worked with conductors including Edward Gardner, Vladimir Jurowski, Paul Daniel and Vasily Petrenko.

Katherine’s involvement in chamber music has been extensive. Most recently she performed Britten’s Phantasy Quartet as part of the British Chamber Music Series at RAM. She has also performed the Mozart Oboe Quartet several times. Katherine had the pleasure of working with John Woolrich in the lead up to a performance of ‘Favola in Musica II’. Katherine has been a part of various groups including an oboe trio and a wind quintet with her current focus on her piano trio (flute, oboe and piano), which have upcoming competitions and recitals.

 

As a soloist, Katherine was highly commended in the Leila Bull oboe prize in both 2016 and 2018. She was also highly commended in the Evelyn Rothwell/ Barbirolli Oboe Prize 2017. She has performed the Haydn Oboe Concerto in C major and participated in many masterclasses including those with Tom Owen, Kai Frömbgen, Jonathan Kelly, Christoph Hartmann and John Anderson.

Katherine is a talented Cor player and won the Barry Grimaldi Cor Prize 2016. Her Cor Anglais orchestral work includes performances of William Tell, Ein Heldenleben, Petrushka, Mahler 5, and the première of Tim Bowers’ Guitar Concerto. She has also included Cor Anglais in solo programmes she has given.

Whilst being available for orchestral, chamber and solo work, Katherine will start her Postgraduate studies on a scholarship at the Guildhall from September 2018, studying with Nicholas Daniel and Gordon Hunt.
